About Christo & Jeanne-Claude
Christo Vladimirov Javacheff and Jeanne-Claude Denat de Guillebon, known collectively as Christo and Jeanne-Claude, were pioneering environmental artists whose large-scale, site-specific installations transformed landscapes and cityscapes into temporary works of breathtaking beauty. Beginning their collaboration in the late 1950s, the duo became celebrated for wrapping buildings, bridges, and natural features in fabric, turning the familiar into the extraordinary. Among their most famous works are The Gates in New York’s Central Park and Wrapped Reichstag in Berlin, installations that combined visionary planning with meticulous engineering and community engagement.
Prolific and remarkably self-reliant, Christo and Jeanne-Claude funded their monumental projects entirely through the sale of preparatory drawings, prints, and limited edition books, creating a self-sustaining model that allowed them complete artistic freedom. Their photo books and catalogues documented every stage of their projects, from conception to installation, providing both visual records and collectible works of art in their own right. Today, collectors prize these editions for their historical significance, artistic insight, and the rare glimpse they offer into the artistsโ ambitious process.
Throughout a career spanning more than five decades, Christo and Jeanne-Claude maintained a singular focus on scale, impermanence, and public engagement, producing works across Europe, North America, and beyond. Their installations were temporary, but their impact endures through extensive photographic documentation and the comprehensive art & catalogues that chronicle their vision. In 2025, the art world marked what would have been their 90th anniversary year, celebrating the enduring influence of their imaginative, transformative approach to contemporary art.
Christo and Jeanne-Claudeโs dedication to innovation and independence made them unique figures in 20th and 21st century art. Their books not only funded spectacular projects but also became treasured objects for collectors, offering a tangible connection to works that existed only fleetingly in physical space. Enthusiasts and collectors of contemporary art continue to seek out Christo and Jeanne-Claude signed first editions, appreciating both their aesthetic and historical significance. Collector’s Note

This signed copy was obtained in person following an onstage conversation with Christo at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome on 1 December 2010. Jeanne-Claude had sadly already passed away, making this a late-life signature from Christo alone. The book signing itself was somewhat chaotic, with books and loose sheets passed through the audience towards the front, each marked with the recipientโs name on a Post-it note. From where I stood, this was as close as I managed to get to the artist.
Despite the disorder, Christo sat patiently, signing everything placed before him with remarkable focus and generosity. The inscription, executed in his distinctive blue crayon, consists simply of his signature and the recipientโs name. I watched the book being signed, albeit from some distance, and was able to photograph Christo at the table as he worked his way through the stack in front of him, providing clear and reassuring provenance. Seeing the book disappear into the crowd and later re-emerge signed was a moment of quiet exhilaration. I was genuinely thrilled to bring home such a wonderful souvenir of a remarkable encounter.
