Born in Little Falls, Minnesota, and raised in nearby Wahpeton, North Dakota, Erdrich is of Ojibwe, German and French ancestry. Her mixed heritage and deep connection to the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians have profoundly shaped her fiction, which is often set in a richly imagined landscape inspired by the northern Plains.

Erdrich studied at Dartmouth College, where she was part of the institution’s first coeducational class, and later completed a master’s degree at Johns Hopkins University. Her later novels further cemented her reputation. The Round House (2012), a powerful exploration of justice and violence on a Native American reservation, won the National Book Award for Fiction. Subsequent works such as LaRose and The Night Watchman, which received the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2021, demonstrate her continued artistic vitality and moral seriousness. Alongside her novels, Erdrich has also published poetry, children’s books and essays, and she is the founder of an independent bookstore in Minneapolis.
