About David Hockney
David Hockney is one of the most influential British artists of the 20th and 21st centuries, celebrated for his vibrant use of colour and innovative approaches to painting, photography, and digital art. Associated with the Pop Art movement, Hockney’s work is characterized by a deep engagement with themes of perception, landscape, and personal experience. His early career saw the production of striking, semi-abstract paintings, such as A Bigger Splash, which captured the sun-drenched allure of Los Angeles swimming pools with a distinctive sense of clarity and stillness.
Hockney’s fascination with perspective and space led him to experiment with different media, including photography, resulting in works like Joiners, a series of collaged Polaroids and photographic compositions that fractured time and movement. His ability to reinvent himself artistically continued with large-scale landscapes, including the monumental A Bigger Grand Canyon and his immersive depictions of Yorkshire in The Arrival of Spring. In recent years, he has embraced digital technology, using iPads and tablets to create vivid works such as The Yosemite Suite, pushing the boundaries of contemporary artistic practice.
Hockney has also published several books reflecting on his artistic methods and philosophy, including Secret Knowledge: Rediscovering the Lost Techniques of the Old Masters, in which he controversially argued that Renaissance artists may have used optical aids to achieve their remarkable precision. His autobiography, David Hockney: A Bigger Book, provides a richly illustrated account of his life and work, while Hockney on Art offers insights into his creative process. His relentless pursuit of new ways to see and depict the world has ensured his status as one of the most original and enduring figures in modern art.
