About Philip Pullman

Philip Pullman, born in Norwich in 1946, is one of the most influential British novelists of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, celebrated for his rich imaginative landscapes, moral complexity and storytelling flair. After spending part of his childhood in Australia and Zimbabwe, he returned to the UK, later studying English at Exeter College, Oxford. Pullman began writing while teaching, and his early works, including Count Karlstein and The Ruby in the Smoke, already revealed his gift for weaving adventure with philosophical depth. His breakthrough came with the trilogy His Dark Materials, beginning with Northern Lights in 1995, a compelling reimagining of Miltonic themes told through the journey of Lyra Belacqua. The series continued with The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass, the latter winning the Whitbread Book of the Year – the first children’s book to do so.

Pullman’s work is often placed within children & young adults literature, yet his layered narratives, moral inquiry and sophisticated literary allusions have attracted devoted adult readership worldwide. Subsequent related titles, including Lyra’s Oxford, Once Upon a Time in the North and the ambitious companion trilogy The Book of Dust, have deepened the mythos of Lyra’s universe while exploring broader political and metaphysical questions. The first volume, La Belle Sauvage, returned to Lyra’s infancy, while The Secret Commonwealth followed her turbulent young adulthood, with a concluding volume eagerly awaited by readers and collectors alike.

Outside the world of Lyra, Pullman has written a range of notable works, including I Was a Rat!, The Scarecrow and His Servant, and the playful Fairy Tales from the Brothers Grimm. He has also published essays and lectures that illuminate his views on storytelling, education, secularism and the imaginative life. His commitment to the freedom to read and his outspoken defence of libraries, literacy and artistic independence have made him a prominent public intellectual as well as a bestselling author.

A former teacher and lifelong resident of Oxford, Pullman has received numerous awards and honours, among them the Carnegie Medal, the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award and a knighthood for services to literature. His novels continue to inspire adaptations for stage, film, audio and television, most notably the recent screen versions of His Dark Materials.

Philip Pullman’s work remains essential for readers drawn to bold storytelling, moral imagination and worlds where myth, science and human frailty meet. For collectors, his first editions – particularly early printings of Northern Lights and other key titles – are highly sought after, prized for their literary importance and enduring cultural impact.
