Jojo Moyes (born 1969) is a British novelist, journalist, and screenwriter whose emotionally rich and often life-affirming stories have captivated readers around the world. Known for her bestselling novel Me Before You (2012), Moyes writes about love, class, and personal reinvention with warmth, wit, and compassion. Born in London, she worked as a journalist for over a decade, including as a feature writer for The Independent, before publishing her first novel, Sheltering Rain, in 2002. Her background in journalism honed her keen eye for character and detail, qualities that would later define her fiction.
Moyes achieved international fame with Me Before You, a deeply moving love story between a young woman, Louisa Clark, and Will Traynor, a man paralysed after an accident. The novel became a global phenomenon, selling over 14 million copies and sparking conversations about love, choice, and dignity. Its success led to two sequels – After You (2015) and Still Me (2018) – and a major film adaptation starring Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin, for which Moyes also wrote the screenplay. Her ability to balance humour and heartbreak, tragedy and resilience, struck a chord with millions of readers.
Before her breakout success, Moyes had already built a solid reputation with earlier novels such as The Peacock Emporium (2008), The Last Letter from Your Lover (2010), and The Ship of Brides (2005), which showcase her gift for weaving past and present narratives into emotionally layered stories. Her later works have continued to explore transformation, empathy, and the human capacity to adapt in the face of change. The Giver of Stars (2019), inspired by the true story of the Depression-era Packhorse Librarians of Kentucky, was praised for its historical scope and feminist themes. More recently, Someone Else’s Shoes (2023) reaffirmed her reputation as a storyteller attuned to the everyday struggles and triumphs of modern women.
Translated into over forty languages, Moyes’s novels have sold more than forty-five million copies worldwide, and her work continues to inspire adaptations for film and television. Her stories, often rooted in ordinary lives, illuminate how love, courage, and kindness can change everything. As of 2025, Jojo Moyes remains one of the leading figures in contemporary women’s fiction – an author whose novels offer both escapism and emotional truth, inviting readers to laugh, cry, and rediscover hope.
