We are delighted to congratulate Anne Carson on being awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature. Carson’s hybrid, boundary-crossing books, moving freely between poetry, essay and translation while staying in constant conversation with the ancient world, have long been admired by readers and critics alike. With this honour, her work receives the global recognition it so deeply deserves.
The Nobel Prize in Literature for 2026 is awarded to the Canadian author Anne Carson, “for her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature.”

Carson learned of the win while at home in Reykjavík, and her reaction, caught by Icelandic broadcaster RUV, was characteristically understated. As she told The Journal: “They’re all crazy.” Asked whether the prize might bring her new readers, she added, with a laugh: “I’ll get a sticker on the front of my books.”
